Northern Soul


Northern Soul is a music and dance movement that emerged in Northern England in the late 1960's from the British mod scene, based on a particular style of black American soul music, especially from the mid-1960's, with a heavy beat and fast tempo.

Mod is a subculture that begins in London in 1958 and spread throughout Great Britain and elsewhere, eventually influencing fashions and trends in other countries and continues today on a smaller scale... the original was associated with amphetamine-fuelled all-night dancing at clubs. 

Rockers generally favoured 1950's rock and roll, mostly by artists like Elvis Presley, Eddie Cochran and Gene Vincent. Mods listened to 1960's ska music, soul and R&B, as well as British brands such as The Who, The Yardbirds and The Kinks.

Founded in 87- Skinheads Against Radical Prejudice: anti-racist skinheads who oppose neo-fascists and other political racists, particularly is those racists identify themselves as Skinheads. 

80's Casuals/Terrace Looks- The police were still looking for the Dr Martens type skinhead look, the casual movement changed all this allowing the first to slip off the radar.

The Human League are an English synth- pop band formed in Sheffield in 1977, same year Soft Cell formed but in Leeds, initially an experimental electronic outfit, the group signed to Virgin Records in 1979 and later attained widespread commercial success with their third album Dare in 1981.
